Samudra Oceans

The ocean is one of the world’s most valuable assets, yet it’s also one of our least understood. The Cambridge innovation ecosystem has given us access to the talent, expertise and networks that have helped turn our vision for Samudra into reality.

Samudra Oceans is building the real-time data layer for the ocean economy.

Founded in 2022 by Joyeeta Das and Alexander Facey through Carbon13’s Venture Builder in Cambridge, the company set out to solve a fundamental problem: the ocean is changing rapidly, but the way we monitor it has barely changed. For decades, environmental monitoring has relied on manual sampling, laboratory analysis and scheduled surveys, offering only snapshots of highly dynamic ecosystems.

This led the team to build NIRA, an AI-enabled marine monitoring system delivering continuous intelligence from below the surface. Lightweight and battery powered, it can be deployed by a single operator in under an hour from a dock, small boat, or platform. It continuously measures at depth, tracking temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, chlorophyll‑a, and more.

Samudra combines this underwater data with satellite imagery of the same area, using AI to fuse both perspectives into a single picture. Data flows directly into a compliance dashboard, with automated anomaly alerts and audit-ready exports mapped to regulatory frameworks. Instead of waiting weeks for lab results, customers can act on evidence in real time. For ports, offshore energy operators and environmental agencies, better ocean intelligence enables faster responses to pollution events, stronger compliance and reduced operational risk.

NIRA has demonstrated 99.8% uptime across live deployments in the North Atlantic, Arctic, and Caribbean, against a backdrop where over 70% of EU Marine Protected Areas lack adequate monitoring. Samudra Oceans has built a multi-million-pound commercial pipeline with ports, offshore wind developers, and environmental agencies. The company has raised over £2 million and is progressing through a Series A funding round, with recognition from COP29, the Earthshot Prize and the European Space Agency.

As ocean regulation tightens and offshore infrastructure expands, Samudra Oceans is positioning NIRA as the default data layer for a £5 trillion ocean economy, enabling societies to protect marine ecosystems, accelerate offshore renewable energy, and adapt to climate‑driven ocean change.
