Cambridge Enterprise has been an invaluable partner in helping Protonera spin out. Their support, from providing early funding and commercial guidance to covering patent costs, has been instrumental in turning our research into a company with the promise of a real-world impact.
Dr Jack Chengzhi Guo
CEO, Protonera
By turning plastic waste into a clean energy source, Protonera aims to reduce landfill, lower carbon emissions and support the transition to a circular economy.
A Cambridge-based cleantech company, Protonera was spun out of the University in 2023 by Dr Chengzhi Guo, Professor Erwin Reisner and Professor Florian Hollfelder.
Its innovative technology breaks down low-grade plastic waste by first treating it with enzymes then uses light energy to convert it into green hydrogen and high value organic chemicals.
The company has filed initial patent applications and completed an accelerator programme with Founders at the University of Cambridge. It has also received investment from Cambridge Enterprise’s Technology Investment Fund (TIF).
Protonera’s solution is designed for recyclers, manufacturers and organisations involved in the hydrogen supply chain.
